RBG’s $2,500 Bag of Bling

June 7th, 2013

Remember that blingy jabot RBG wore earlier this year that came as part of a Glamour Magazine gift bag? Turns out it cost $2,500.

Tony Mauro reports on some of the other gifts the Justices received (only one neck doily):

Justice Stephen Breyer reported more modest royalties of $29,980 from Random House for his 2011 book Making Our Democracy Work. Similarly, retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor received under $1,600 from Random House for royalties on her previous books. For his part, retired Justice John Paul Stevens reported $14,000 in payments for book reviews he penned for the New York Review of Books in 2012.

Justices are also required to list gifts they received that are valued at more than $350. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg received a $2,500 gift bag from Glamour Magazine as a Woman of the Year, while Justice Antonin Scalia reported the gift of a shotgun worth $1,000 from the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Sotomayor cleaned up with more than $3 million in royalties from her book.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s bestselling memoir about growing up in poverty has earned her more than $3 million, including $1.9 million in advances on royalties she received last year.

In her 2012 financial disclosure form released Friday, Sotomayor indicated she received $1 million in April, 2012 and $925,000 in December from the Knopf Doubleday Group, publishers of My Beloved World, which debuted in January of this year. Earlier, she had reported receiving a $1.2 million advance in 2010. She also listed more than $3,000 in reimbursements for book promotion expenses from the publisher in 2012.

Does Justice Ginsburg “knit through every big decision?”

May 30th, 2013

Has anyone ever heard this bit, nestled in a random NRP interview with a professor at the University of Wisconsin:

BARRY: And, you know, our beautiful Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has knit – you know, she knits through every big decision. I mean, think about that. And I always dream she’s knitting a big cozy for Scalia, like a full-body cozy.

CONAN: I was just thinking about, you know, there – some hearings are longer than others. The Obamacare scarf must be 15 feet long.

BARRY: Everybody has a full, hand-knit superhero outfit by Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

And more importantly–has RBG ever knitted her own neck doily?

Justice Sotomayor Offers Career Advice to Abby on Sesame Street — Become A Supreme Court Justice!

November 10th, 2012

Sound advice, but I don’t think Abby could make it through the confirmation hearing. Fortunately Abby can keep her day job as she, along with Big Bird, won’t get fired any time soon. And mega props to Justice Sotomayor and Abby for wearing a neck doily (in case you were wondering, my blog is linked to on the Wikipedia page for the jabot!).

I am a reference on the Wikipedia page for the Jabot.

December 28th, 2010

The Jabot, fondly known on this blog as a neck doily, is the filly lacy white thing that Justice Ginsburg wears. To see some of my jabot related posts, see here, herehere, and here. I just found that I am now an official source on the Wikipedia Jabot page. Win!

In other Wikipedia news, the Harlan Institute now has a Wikipedia page.

Fashion @ 1 First Street and The New Supreme Court Portrait

Justice Kagan is not wearing a neck doily, or as the Washington Post put it,  “doilylike frippery.”

Kagan wisely went with a discreet hint of delicate white fabric peeking out from the top of her robe, as did Justice Sonia Sotomayor. (They need a little something at their necks so they don’t appear to be naked under their judicial uniforms.) The men, including Chief Justice John Roberts, wore basic black. None of them even went so far as to pair a bow tie with his dress shirt.

A closeup of the newest Justice’s style:

I will update the FantasySCOTUS 10th Justice picture shortly.
