A 2-3 Playoff Series Makes More Sense

May 17th, 2012

MLB changed the MLB AL and NL Division series from a 2-2-1 to a 2-3 format. They did so to accomodate the new 1-game wild card round. BUt doesn’t this ordering make more sense?

I suppose home-field advantage is important to start the series, but isn’t it more important to close out the series?

You need 3 games to win this series.

Under the old format, the higher-ranked team could close out at home only at Game 5. That assumes it goes the distance.

Now the higher-ranked team can close out at home on game 3, 4, and 5.

It always seemed anti-climactic when the better team wins games 1 and 2 at home, and then finishes up on the road.

This may also make more sense because it guarantees the worse team to get 2 home playoff games. Though, it is possible if the lower-ranked team sweeps, that the higher-ranked team will only have one home game.

This is game theory, literally.
