I think it is a great idea. Travelling is expensive, time-consuming, and often-counterproductive. With respect to the cost of losing the schmooze, I am not particularly concerned. I have developed relationship with probably hundreds of professors whom I’ve never met, solely through email communication. It is certainly different, but not necessarily ineffective.
