Omniveillance: State Farm App Grades Driving Habits

May 2nd, 2011

State Farm Insurance has introduced a new iPhone DRiver Feedback app that relies on your phones GPS to “gauge your acceleration, braking and cornering habits” to generate a driver safety score. The current iteration of the software does not collect any information (just like Apple doesn’t track your location), though I can easily envision a future version of this software that results in increases/decreases in a premium based on safe driving habits. This permissive app is simply a way to normalize this type of tracking technology.

Wyomingite? Don’t the people of Wyoming deserve better?

May 2nd, 2011

Justice Scalia prefers the term Wyomans to Wyomingite. In Montana v. Wyoming and North Dakota, Nino dropped this comical footnote to the word “Wyomans.”

*The dictionary-approved term is “Wyomingite,” which is also thename of a type of lava, see Webster’s New International Dictionary 2961 (2d ed. 1957). I believe the people of Wyoming deserve better.
