When I visited the British embassy in D.C., I noted that hanging on the walls near the grand staircase were the portraits of King George III and Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. I joked with the staffer that these are curious monarchs to honor in the United States, in light of that entire 1776 episode. She chuckled, perhaps recalling that the embassy recently commemorated the 200th anniversary of burning the White House. (This is a big deal in the Commonwealth Countries–in Vancouver I saw a plaque depicting the White House ablaze).
And now, once again there are monarchs in the line to the named George and Charlotte. So enjoy the meme.
